Direct Drive Wheelbases on PS5 and Xbox: How to Find the Right One
In short: not every wheelbase works on a console. On PS5 and PS4 there are currently two compatible direct drive wheelbases in our range, both from Fanatec: the Gran Turismo DD Pro and the ClubSport DD+, including the bundles that contain them. On Xbox it is the steering wheel that counts: Fanatec wheelbases work with an Xbox-licensed rim, and MOZA offers the R3 Xbox bundle. Current MOZA wheelbases do not work on PlayStation: the first PS5 models were announced in September 2026 but are not yet on sale. Simagic and Simucube are designed for PC.
"Does it work on PS5?" is the first question we get from console players. The answer depends on how manufacturers obtain licences from Sony and Microsoft, and it changes from brand to brand. In this guide we look at why many wheelbases only work on PC, which setups in our range work on PlayStation and Xbox, how to get one that works on both, and what to check on the product page before buying. For compatibility we rely solely on the manufacturers' official documentation, updated to October 2026.

Why not all wheelbases work on consoles
PlayStation and Xbox only accept peripherals approved by Sony and Microsoft. To sell a compatible wheelbase, a manufacturer has to join the official licensing programmes of the two consoles: a long process that not every brand has gone through. A PC, on the other hand, recognises any peripheral with its own driver or software.
The two consoles work differently:
- On PlayStation the licence is in the wheelbase. If the wheelbase has a PlayStation licence, Fanatec explains in its guide Which Fanatec Steering Wheel is Best for PlayStation? that any connected Fanatec product becomes compatible with the console. If the wheelbase does not have one, no steering wheel can make it compatible.
- On Xbox the licence is in the steering wheel. Fanatec states that Xbox compatibility depends on the steering wheel, which must contain the Xbox security chip. With a licensed steering wheel, even a wheelbase without its own licence works on Microsoft's console.
There are third-party adapters that claim to make PC wheelbases work on consoles. They are not solutions approved by the manufacturers: MOZA, for example, states that there is currently no official solution for PlayStation. In this guide we only consider supported setups.
Compatibility at a glance
Here is how the wheelbases in our range behave, according to the manufacturers' official pages.
| Wheelbase | PS5 and PS4 | Xbox Series X|S and One | PC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro | Yes, officially licensed | Yes, with an Xbox-licensed steering wheel | Yes |
| Fanatec ClubSport DD+ | Yes, officially licensed | Yes, with an Xbox-licensed steering wheel | Yes |
| Fanatec CSL DD, ClubSport DD, Podium DD | No | Yes, with an Xbox-licensed steering wheel | Yes |
| MOZA R3 (Xbox bundle) | No | Yes, officially licensed | Yes |
| Other MOZA wheelbases (R3 PC, R5, R9, R12, R16, R21, R25) | No | Only with the MOZA ESX steering wheel | Yes |
| Simagic Alpha EVO | No | No | Yes |
| Simucube | No | No | Yes |
With Simagic, setup is done through the SimPro Manager software on PC, and Simagic does not state any console compatibility. Simucube says so explicitly in its FAQ: its products are compatible with PC only.
PlayStation 5 and PS4
On PlayStation the choice starts with the wheelbase, and there are currently two licensed direct drive wheelbases in our range:
- the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro (€499 for the 8 Nm wheelbase alone), featured on PlayStation's page of the best racing wheels for PS5 and PS4 as the official direct drive wheel for Gran Turismo;
- the Fanatec ClubSport DD+ (€799), with 18 Nm of holding torque, for those who want more force.
Both work on PS5, PS4 and PC. You can fit any Fanatec steering wheel to these wheelbases, including those designed for Xbox: the console recognises them because the licence is in the wheelbase. They are also available in ready-made setups:
| Setup | What's included | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Gran Turismo DD Pro (5 Nm) Bundle | Wheelbase, GT DD Pro steering wheel, CSL pedals and table clamp | 649 € |
| Gran Turismo DD Pro (8 Nm) Bundle | As above, with the Boost Kit 180 to reach 8 Nm | 749 € |
| Gran Turismo DD Extreme | ClubSport DD+ and a dedicated Gran Turismo steering wheel, without pedals | 1.099 € |
| ClubSport Racing F1 Bundle | ClubSport DD+ and a Formula 1-licensed steering wheel, without pedals | 1.149 € |
| ARCSIM GT-M + Gran Turismo DD Pro (8 Nm) | ARCSIM GT-M cockpit and 8 Nm GT DD Pro bundle | 1.348 € |
For Gran Turismo 7, Fanatec is the most natural choice: in 2023 Fanatec was announced as the official wheel partner of the Gran Turismo World Series, and the steering wheel in the GT DD Pro bundle was designed with Polyphony Digital. To compare the torque and accessories of Fanatec wheelbases, you will find everything in our Fanatec wheelbase guide.
Do MOZA wheelbases work on PS5?
Not at the moment. MOZA support states it clearly in its wheelbase FAQ: current MOZA products do not support PS4 and PS5, and there is no official solution. This applies to every MOZA wheelbase we sell, from the R3 to the R25.
Things are starting to change, though. At the Tokyo Game Show in September 2026 MOZA unveiled its first PS5 setups, the R5S Pro and R16S Ultra. They are developed within the official PlayStation licensing programme, with native Gran Turismo 7 support resulting from a collaboration with Polyphony Digital. However, PS5 operation is still subject to Sony's final approval, and MOZA has not announced prices or a release date. Until then, if you want a MOZA wheelbase, remember that it will work on PC and, under the conditions we look at below, on Xbox.
What about Simagic on PS5?
No. Simagic wheelbases, including the Alpha EVO series, are configured with SimPro Manager on PC, and Simagic does not state compatibility with PlayStation or Xbox.
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
On Xbox the rule is reversed: it is the steering wheel that counts. Fanatec explains this in its Xbox compatibility guide: any Fanatec wheelbase, from the CSL DD to the Podium DD, works on Xbox if you fit an Xbox-licensed rim. There are three Xbox-licensed Fanatec rims in our range:
- CSL GT3 (€199), a round GT rim;
- CSL Elite WRC (€219), a round rally rim licensed by the World Rally Championship;
- ClubSport Formula V2.5 X (€369), a formula rim for single-seaters. We cover it in our guide to Fanatec F1 steering wheels.
Pedals, shifters and handbrakes must be connected directly to the wheelbase: on Xbox, peripherals connected only via USB are not recognised. If you want a ready-made Xbox setup, our range includes the CSL DD Ready2Race GT3 Bundle (5 Nm) (€529), with wheelbase, CSL GT3 steering wheel and CSL pedals, and the Podium DD + CSL GT3 (€1,298), for those looking for the most powerful Fanatec wheelbase.
MOZA on Xbox: the R3 bundle
The MOZA R3 Bundle Xbox (€359) is the most affordable Xbox-licensed direct drive setup in our range. It contains the R3 wheelbase with 3.9 Nm of peak torque, the Xbox-licensed ESX steering wheel, the SR-P Lite two-pedal set and the table clamp. It works on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PCs running Windows 10 and 11.
The ESX steering wheel is the key: according to MOZA support, it can be used together with a MOZA wheelbase to play on Xbox. So if you later move up to a more powerful wheelbase, you can keep the bundle's steering wheel and carry on playing on console. The other MOZA wheelbases, without the ESX, only work on PC.
One setup for both PS5 and Xbox
If you have both consoles at home, or have not decided yet, there is a combination that works everywhere: a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase plus an Xbox-licensed rim. The wheelbase provides PS5 and PS4 compatibility, the steering wheel provides Xbox compatibility, and it works on PC regardless.
- The most affordable combination: Gran Turismo DD Pro (€499) with CSL GT3 (€199), i.e. €698 plus pedals.
- The complete setup: the ARCSIM GT-M + Fanatec DD Pro 8Nm + CSL GT3 + CSL (2 pedals) bundle (€1,399), with GT-M cockpit and seat, 8 Nm GT DD Pro wheelbase, CSL GT3 steering wheel and CSL pedals.
- More torque: ClubSport DD+ (€799) with CSL GT3 or, for single-seaters, with the Formula V2.5 X.
A word of caution about PlayStation bundles: the steering wheel in the GT DD Pro Bundle and those in the GT DD Extreme and the Racing F1 Bundle are not Xbox-licensed. To play on Xbox as well, you need a second rim.
PC
Every wheelbase in our range works on PC, and it is the platform with the widest choice of brands, simulators and accessories. A few examples:
- the MOZA R3 Bundle PC (€299), one of the most affordable complete direct drive setups in our range, with wheelbase, steering wheel and pedals;
- the MOZA R16 Ultra (€549), with 16 Nm of torque, which on Xbox only works with the ESX steering wheel;
- the Simagic Alpha EVO Sport + GT Neo + P700 (2 pedals) bundle (€779), with wheelbase, steering wheel and pedals.
If you only play on PC and want to compare brands by price range, you will find the setups in our guide to the best PC steering wheel.
Console players need a PC too. Fanatec only distributes new firmware through the Fanatec App for Windows, and MOZA and Simagic also update their wheelbases from their PC software. Factor it in, even if only for updates.
Game first, platform second
If you do not own a console yet, it pays to start from the game you will play most: many racing titles are only released on certain platforms, and the platform determines which wheelbases you can use.
| Game | Platforms | Usable wheelbases in our range |
|---|---|---|
| Gran Turismo 7 | PS5 and PS4 | Fanatec GT DD Pro and ClubSport DD+ |
| Forza Motorsport | Xbox Series X|S and PC | On Xbox: Fanatec wheelbases with an Xbox-licensed steering wheel, MOZA R3 Xbox. On PC: all |
| Forza Horizon 5 | Xbox, PC and, since April 2025, PS5 | Depends on the platform you play on |
| F1 25 | PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC | Depends on the platform you play on |
| Assetto Corsa Competizione | PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Depends on the platform you play on |
| iRacing | PC only | All |
Even on a compatible console, steering wheel support depends on the game: some features, such as the rim's displays and LEDs, may not be available. Before buying, it is worth checking the list of peripherals supported by the game you are interested in.
What to check on the product page before buying
- The listed platform. Look for PS5, PS4 or Xbox stated explicitly on the product page or on the box. If you only see "PC", the wheelbase does not work on consoles.
- Which part carries the licence. For PlayStation it must be the wheelbase, for Xbox the steering wheel. An Xbox bundle with a Fanatec wheelbase works on Xbox thanks to the steering wheel, not the wheelbase.
- The bundle version. Some bundles come in a PC version and a console version, such as the MOZA R3: they have the same wheelbase but different steering wheels, and only the Xbox version works on the console.
- How peripherals connect. On consoles, pedals, shifters and handbrakes must connect to the wheelbase. USB-only peripherals work on PC.
- The games. On consoles the steering wheel works in games that support official peripherals, such as Gran Turismo 7, the F1 games or Forza. If in doubt, check the game's list.
- Updates. Bear in mind that firmware and advanced settings almost always require a Windows PC.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying the MOZA R3 Bundle PC to play on Xbox. The wheelbase is the same as in the Xbox bundle, but without the ESX steering wheel it does not work on the console.
- Buying a Fanatec CSL DD for PS5. It has no PlayStation licence, and Fanatec makes clear that it cannot be upgraded to get one.
- Buying a MOZA wheelbase for PS5 today. Current wheelbases are not compatible; the first PS5 models have been announced but are not yet on sale.
- Thinking the steering wheel makes it PlayStation compatible. On PS5 it is the wheelbase that counts: no rim can make an unlicensed wheelbase compatible.
- Relying on adapters. They are not solutions supported by the wheelbase manufacturers.
- Connecting the pedals via USB on a console. They must be connected to the wheelbase, otherwise the console cannot see them.
