Fanatec F1 Steering Wheel: How to Choose the Right One for PC, PS5 and Xbox

Andrea Fernando Rossetti

In short: Fanatec's steering wheels for F1 and single-seaters come down to three rims and one bundle. The ClubSport Formula V3 (€349) is the most complete, with a 290 mm diameter and a 2.7" display. The ClubSport Formula V2.5 X (€369) is the only Xbox-licensed Formula rim. The ClubSport F1 Esports V2 (€239) carries the Formula 1 licence and costs less. The Racing F1 Bundle (€1,149) combines an 18 Nm ClubSport DD+ wheelbase with a steering wheel licensed by F1 and PlayStation 5. On PS5, any Fanatec rim works as long as the wheelbase has the PlayStation licence, i.e. the GT DD Pro or ClubSport DD+.

Anyone looking for a Fanatec steering wheel for F1 usually has the same picture in mind: paddles on the wheel, plenty of controls within thumb's reach and a small rim you can turn quickly. Fanatec's range, however, offers several routes, with differences that matter: diameter, display, licences and, above all, compatibility with consoles and wheelbases. In this guide we compare the Formula rims in our catalogue and the Racing F1 Bundle, with up-to-date prices and the rules for choosing without making mistakes. You'll also find them all in the Fanatec Formula collection.

Fanatec Formula steering wheels compared

In our catalogue you'll find three Formula rims to pair with a Fanatec wheelbase, plus a bundle that includes both wheelbase and steering wheel. The table sums up the differences that weigh most in your choice.

Steering wheel Diameter Display Licences PS5 and PS4 Xbox Price
Fanatec ClubSport Formula V3 290 mm 2.7" OLED — Yes, on a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase No 349 €
Fanatec ClubSport Formula V2.5 X 270 mm 1" OLED Xbox Yes, on a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase Yes 369 €
Fanatec ClubSport F1 Esports V2 270 mm Blue LED Formula 1 Yes, on a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase, with some features possibly limited No 239 €
Fanatec ClubSport Racing F1 Bundle (wheelbase and steering wheel) 270 mm 1" OLED Formula 1 and PlayStation 5 Yes No 1.149 €

The three rims are sold without a wheelbase: to use them you need a Fanatec wheelbase. The bundle, on the other hand, includes both wheelbase and steering wheel: pedals and desk mounting have to be chosen separately.

What makes a Formula steering wheel different

A Formula steering wheel mimics the ones used in single-seaters: no round rim, but two grips either side of a faceplate packed with controls. Fanatec describes it like this: it has a smaller diameter for quick changes of direction and lots of buttons and other controls for advanced adjustments.

  • Smaller diameter. Fanatec Formula rims measure 270 or 290 mm, compared with 300-320 mm for round GT rims. With less leverage, for the same wheelbase torque you feel more force in your hands: we cover this in the section on wheelbases.
  • Controls under your thumbs. Encoders, rotary switches and FunkySwitch let you change brake bias, engine map and differential on the move without taking your hands off the wheel, just like real drivers do.
  • Paddles on the wheel. Single-seaters use a semi-automatic gearbox operated by paddles behind the steering wheel, and the clutch is a lever, not a pedal. All the rims in this guide have magnetic paddles, with a crisp, precise click.

If you want to know how real steering wheels work, the official Formula 1 podcast dedicated an episode to how they're designed and what all the buttons do, with a McLaren race engineer.

A Formula steering wheel isn't just for F1. Fanatec also offers the Formula V3 for disciplines such as GT and LMP. If, however, you often drive road cars, rally or drift, a round rim is still more comfortable for large steering inputs.

ClubSport Formula V3: the most complete

The ClubSport Formula V3 is the latest evolution of Fanatec's Formula series, which Fanatec presents as a refined version of the V2.5. Compared with the V2.5 X it has a larger diameter, a bigger display and more controls. Fanatec describes all its features in its guide to the ClubSport Formula V3.

  • Construction: 290 mm diameter, 5 mm carbon fibre faceplate, replaceable perforated leather grips, around 1,350 g with the quick release.
  • Display and LEDs: 2.7" white OLED for the Tuning Menu and telemetry (Intelligent Telemetry Mode, in games that support it), nine RGB RevLEDs for engine revs and six RGB FlagLEDs for flags, wheel slip and pit limiter.
  • Controls: 11 front buttons, two 7-way FunkySwitches, two 2-position toggle switches, three 12-position rotary switches and two thumb dials with push function.
  • Paddles: magnetic, in CNC-machined black anodised aluminium.
  • Quick release: QR2 wheel-side already fitted.

It works on PC and, when mounted on a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase, on PS5 and PS4. It is not compatible with Xbox: if you play on Xbox, the right Formula rim is the V2.5 X.

ClubSport Formula V2.5 X: the Formula rim for Xbox

The ClubSport Formula V2.5 X is the Fanatec Formula rim officially licensed for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On Xbox, compatibility depends on the steering wheel, not the wheelbase: with the V2.5 X, even a CSL DD or a ClubSport DD can be used on Microsoft's console. On PS5 and PS4 it works like the others, i.e. on a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase.

  • Construction: 270 mm diameter, 5 mm solid carbon faceplate, around 1,250 g.
  • Display and LEDs: 1" white OLED, nine RevLEDs and two FlagLED bars with three LEDs each, plus an LED that shows the Xbox connection.
  • Controls: 11 buttons, two 2-position toggle switches, two 12-position rotary switches with encoder function, a 7-way FunkySwitch, an analogue joystick and two thumb encoders. The buttons with Xbox symbols are removable, and racing-style caps are also included in the box.
  • Vibration: two motors built into the grips.
  • Quick release: QR2 wheel-side included, packed separately in the box.

Compared with the V3 it has a smaller display and fewer rotary switches, but adds the joystick and the Xbox licence. It costs €20 more: it mainly makes sense if you play on Xbox or plan to.

ClubSport F1 Esports V2: the F1 licence at the lowest price

The ClubSport F1 Esports V2 is the most affordable Formula rim in the range and the only one sold on its own with an official Formula 1 licence. It has a 270 mm diameter, a CNC-machined anodised aluminium faceplate, Alcantara grips and a blue LED display showing data such as speed and gear. It has nine RGB RevLEDs, two FlagLEDs, magnetic paddles, 11 buttons, an analogue joystick and a 7-way FunkySwitch.

Two things to know before you buy:

  • Platforms: it works on PC and is not compatible with Xbox. On PlayStation it works when mounted on a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase, but Fanatec warns that some features may be limited by the console and only guarantees full functionality on PC.
  • Torque: Fanatec lists it among the rims that, with the QR2 Lite, can use full torque even on the ClubSport DD, DD+ and Podium DD.

At €239 it's the most sensible choice if you play on PC, want a Formula steering wheel with the F1 licence and don't need the V3's OLED display or rotary switches.

Racing F1 Bundle: what's inside

The ClubSport Racing F1 Bundle (€1,149) is the ready-made solution for anyone who plays on PlayStation and wants a steering wheel with the Formula 1 licence. In the box you'll find:

  • the ClubSport DD+ wheelbase, now with 18 Nm holding torque (it was 15 Nm before the May 2026 firmware update), with a QR2 Type-F quick release already fitted;
  • the ClubSport Steering Wheel F1 PS5, with QR2 already fitted;
  • the power supply, four T-nuts for rail mounting, the USB cable and the quick start guide.

Pedals and table clamp are not included. The wheelbase is secured to a cockpit with the T-nuts, or to a desk with the ClubSport DD table clamp, sold separately.

The steering wheel has a 270 mm diameter, a 5 mm blue carbon faceplate, perforated leather grips, a 1" OLED display, nine RevLEDs and two FlagLEDs. The controls follow the V2.5 X layout: 11 buttons, four magnetic paddles, two 2-position toggle switches, two 12-position rotary switches with encoder, a 7-way FunkySwitch, an analogue joystick and two thumb encoders. It is officially licensed by Formula 1 and PlayStation 5, and the system works on PS5, PS4 and PC.

A useful comparison: the ClubSport DD+ on its own costs €799, so the DD+ with the Formula V3 comes to €1,148, almost the same as the bundle. The bundle gives you the F1 licence and the matching steering wheel; the combination with the V3 gives you a bigger display and more controls. Both work on PS5, because the PlayStation licence belongs to the wheelbase.

Other bundles with a Formula steering wheel

As well as the Racing F1 Bundle, our catalogue includes two other bundles with a Formula steering wheel:

  • Podium DD + ClubSport Formula V2.5 (€1,468): Fanatec's flagship wheelbase, with 25 Nm holding torque, paired with the Formula V2.5 rim. The Podium DD is not compatible with PlayStation.
  • ClubSport DD+ + XF1 Ultimate (€1,649), designed for PC: the 18 Nm DD+ with the Leoxz XF1 Ultimate rim in 3K carbon, a 4.3" IPS display, 34 RGB LEDs and the Leoxz wireless kit included.

Which wheelbases and platforms they work on

Fanatec Formula rims fit Fanatec wheelbases with a QR2 quick release. For consoles, two different rules apply:

  • On PlayStation, the wheelbase is what counts. Fanatec states this clearly in its guide Which Fanatec Steering Wheel is Best for PlayStation?: any Fanatec product connected to a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase becomes compatible with the console. This also applies to Xbox-licensed steering wheels.
  • On Xbox, the steering wheel is what counts. Among the Formula rims in our catalogue, only the V2.5 X has the Xbox licence.
Wheelbase Torque Formula V3 Formula V2.5 X F1 Esports V2 Wheelbase price
CSL DD (8 Nm) 8 Nm peak PC PC, Xbox PC 429 €
Gran Turismo DD Pro (8 Nm) 8 Nm peak PC, PlayStation PC, PlayStation, Xbox PC, PlayStation¹ 499 €
ClubSport DD 15 Nm holding PC PC, Xbox PC 599 €
ClubSport DD+ 18 Nm holding PC, PlayStation PC, PlayStation, Xbox PC, PlayStation¹ 799 €
Podium DD 25 Nm holding torque PC PC, Xbox PC 1.099 €

¹ On PlayStation, some F1 Esports V2 features may be limited by the console.

If you still need to choose your wheelbase, our guide to Fanatec wheelbases gives you the full comparison of torque, platforms and accessories. If you mainly play F1 25, EA publishes the official list of supported wheels and peripherals for each platform: it's worth checking before you buy.

Smaller rim, more force in your hands

The wheelbase's torque is transmitted to the edge of the rim: the smaller the diameter, the more force you feel. On a 270 mm rim the force is around 11% higher than on a 300 mm round rim, for the same torque. In practice, with torque at maximum:

Wheelbase torque 270 mm rim 290 mm rim
8 Nm (CSL DD, GT DD Pro) 59 N, like lifting 6.0 kg 55 N, 5.6 kg
15 Nm (ClubSport DD) 111 N, 11.3 kg 103 N, 10.5 kg
18 Nm (ClubSport DD+) 133 N, 13.6 kg 124 N, 12.7 kg
25 Nm (Podium DD) 185 N, 18.9 kg 172 N, 17.6 kg

That's why, with a Formula steering wheel, an 8 Nm wheelbase is already a good starting point, and with the DD+ and Podium DD it's best to set the force in the software rather than always running it at 100%.

Paddles, clutch and pedals for single-seaters

Clutch paddles

In a real F1 car the clutch is a lever on the steering wheel, used almost exclusively for the race start and for pulling away after a pit stop. None of the rims in this guide has clutch paddles as standard. If you want more realistic starts, the Podium Paddle Module (€199), officially the Podium Advanced Paddle Module, adds two analogue clutch paddles and two pairs of magnetic paddles with 3 mm carbon plates. Fanatec lists it as compatible with the Formula V3, Formula V2.5 X and F1 Esports V2, but doesn't list it for the Racing F1 Bundle steering wheel.

Two pedals are enough

For single-seaters you don't need a clutch pedal. Fanatec explains this in its guide Do I need a clutch pedal for Formula racing? and recommends a two-pedal set, throttle and brake, as the ideal configuration. The options in our catalogue:

  • CSL Pedals (€99): two steel pedals with Hall sensors. You can expand them with the load cell kit or with the CSL Clutch Pedal Kit (€59), if you need a clutch for other cars.
  • CSL Pedals LC (€179): load cell brake, which measures the pressure of your foot rather than pedal travel and makes your braking more repeatable.
  • ClubSport Pedals V3 (€329): load cell adjustable up to 90 kg. Watch the name: the ClubSport V3 is a pedal set, the ClubSport Formula V3 is the steering wheel.

Your driving position matters as much as the hardware. In single-seaters you sit low, with your legs raised and the steering wheel close to your chest: if you are building your cockpit with F1 in mind, take this into account. We cover it in our guide to home driving simulators.

Which Fanatec Formula steering wheel to choose

If… Choose Why
You play on PS5 and want everything in one box Racing F1 Bundle (€1,149) 18 Nm PlayStation-licensed wheelbase and a steering wheel with F1 and PS5 licences
You play on PS5 and want the most complete steering wheel ClubSport DD+ + Formula V3 (€1,148) 2.7" display, more controls, same wheelbase as the bundle
You already own a GT DD Pro and play on PS5 Formula V3 (€349) Fits your wheelbase and works on PS5
You play on Xbox Formula V2.5 X (€369) The only Xbox-licensed formula rim, on any Fanatec wheelbase
You play on PC on a limited budget F1 Esports V2 (€239) F1 licence and magnetic paddles at the lowest price
You play on PC and want the very best Podium DD + Formula V2.5 (€1,468) or DD+ + XF1 Ultimate (€1,649) 25 Nm of holding torque, or a high-end formula rim with a 4.3" display

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Confusing the Formula V3 with the ClubSport V3. The ClubSport Formula V3 is a steering wheel, the ClubSport V3 is a pedal set. Many searches mix them up.
  2. Buying the Formula V3 or the F1 Esports V2 for Xbox. Neither is compatible: on Xbox you need the V2.5 X.
  3. Thinking the steering wheel makes it PlayStation compatible. On PS5 it is the wheelbase that counts: with a CSL DD, a ClubSport DD or a Podium DD, no rim works on PlayStation.
  4. Forgetting the pedals. The Racing F1 Bundle and the other formula bundles do not include them.
  5. Always running maximum torque. On a small rim the same torque feels stronger: with the DD+ and Podium DD it is best to start with a lower force.
  6. Buying three pedals just for F1. For single-seaters a throttle and brake are enough; you are better off investing in a load cell brake.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Fanatec steering wheel for F1?

It depends on the platform. On PC and PS5 the ClubSport Formula V3 is the most complete rim; on Xbox the only compatible formula rim is the V2.5 X. If you want the Formula 1 licence, choose the F1 Esports V2 or, on PS5, the Racing F1 Bundle.

Does the Fanatec F1 steering wheel work on PS5?

Yes, if it is mounted on a PlayStation-licensed wheelbase: the Gran Turismo DD Pro or ClubSport DD+. The Racing F1 Bundle already includes the DD+ and is licensed for PS5. With the CSL DD, ClubSport DD and Podium DD, no steering wheel works on PlayStation.

Which Fanatec Formula steering wheel works on Xbox?

Among the formula rims in our range, only the ClubSport Formula V2.5 X, which is officially licensed for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On Xbox it works with all compatible Fanatec wheelbases, because compatibility depends on the steering wheel.

What is the difference between the Formula V3 and the Formula V2.5 X?

The V3 has a 290 mm diameter versus 270 mm, a 2.7" OLED display versus 1", and three 12-position rotary switches instead of two. The V2.5 X adds the Xbox licence and an analogue joystick. The V3 costs €349, the V2.5 X €369.

Are the ClubSport V3 and the Formula V3 the same thing?

No. The ClubSport Formula V3 is a formula steering wheel, the ClubSport V3 is a pedal set with a load cell brake. They pair well, but they are two different products.

Does the Racing F1 Bundle include pedals?

No. It contains the ClubSport DD+ wheelbase, the F1 steering wheel with QR2, the power supply, T-nuts, the USB cable and the quick start guide. Pedals and the table clamp are sold separately.

Which wheelbase do I need for a Fanatec Formula steering wheel?

A Fanatec wheelbase with a QR2 mount. To play on PS5 you need a GT DD Pro or a ClubSport DD+; on PC and Xbox you can also use the CSL DD, ClubSport DD and Podium DD, on Xbox with the V2.5 X.

Do I need a clutch pedal to drive single-seaters?

No. Single-seaters use a paddle-operated gearbox, and the clutch is only needed at the start, via a lever on the steering wheel. Fanatec recommends a two-pedal set as the ideal setup for Formula.

Can I also use a formula steering wheel for GT cars?

Yes. Fanatec also offers the Formula V3 for GT and LMP. For rally, drifting or road cars, where you turn the steering wheel a lot, a round rim is still more comfortable.
