MOZA R3, R5, R9, R12, R16, R21 and R25 Wheelbases: Which One to Choose?
In short: MOZA wheelbases fall into three tiers. The R3 (3.9 Nm) and R5 (5.5-6 Nm) are sold in bundles with a steering wheel, pedals and desk clamp, from €299: they're the easiest way to get started at your desk. The R9 (9 Nm, €319) and R12 (12 Nm, €419) are standalone wheelbases for those who drive often and want to choose their own steering wheel and pedals. The Ultra series, with the R16, R21 and R25 (from €549 to €999), has the new motors designed to eliminate cogging and the 21-bit encoder. They all work on PC; on Xbox you need an Xbox-licensed steering wheel, like the ESX in the R3 Xbox bundle. On PS5, none of them for now.
MOZA wheelbases are the direct drive wheelbases our customers search for most, especially the R3 and R5. In this guide we compare the MOZA wheelbases in our range using data from the product pages and MOZA support, and explain the differences between the entry-level bundles, the cockpit wheelbases and the Ultra series, what works on Xbox, and which steering wheels and pedals to pair them with. If you're not sure yet how much force you need, start with our guide on how many Nm a direct drive wheelbase needs.

MOZA wheelbases in one table
Here's how they differ, with data from the product pages and prices including VAT.
| Wheelbase | Torque | Encoder | How it's sold | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R3 | 3.9 Nm | 15-bit | Bundle with steering wheel, pedals and clamp: R3 Bundle PC or R3 Bundle Xbox | €299 (PC), €359 (Xbox) |

The R3 and R5 aren't sold on their own: you'll only find them in bundles. From the R9 upwards you buy the wheelbase and choose the steering wheel and pedals separately, or go for a wheelbase-plus-steering-wheel bundle. All MOZA wheelbases and steering wheels use the same MOZA quick release, so any MOZA steering wheel fits any MOZA wheelbase.
R3 and R5: the starter bundles
The R3 and R5 bundles have everything you need to drive at your desk: wheelbase, steering wheel, 2-pedal set with Hall effect sensors and desk clamp. You don't need a cockpit, and the clamp comes off when you've finished.
- R3 Bundle PC (€299): 3.9 Nm wheelbase, ES Lite steering wheel with 22 customisable buttons, SR-P Lite pedals (throttle and brake) and a desk clamp angled at 15 degrees. It's the most affordable direct drive setup in our range.
- R3 Bundle Xbox (€359): same wheelbase and pedals, but with the Xbox-licensed ESX steering wheel. It's the only MOZA bundle in our range that works on the console; we cover this further down. The customer who reviewed it bought it to get started on console and later mounted it on a cockpit.
- R5 Bundle (€399): 5.5 Nm wheelbase with the NexGen 4.0 force feedback algorithm, 280 mm microfibre ES steering wheel with 22 buttons and 10 RGB LEDs, SR-P Lite pedals and clamp. It's our best-selling MOZA setup.
- R5 Pro Bundle (€419): R5 Pro 6 Nm wheelbase with 21-bit magnetic encoder, 280 mm ES Lite steering wheel with 10 RGB LEDs, SRP Lite 2 pedals with Hall sensors, and clamp. For €20 more than the R5 you get an extra half newton metre and a much finer encoder.
You can feel the difference between the R3 and R5: 5.5 Nm versus 3.9 Nm means more pronounced kerbs and loss of grip. If you plan to drive often, the R5 is the more sensible starting point. The bundle pedals read pedal travel, not force: for a load cell brake you'll need dedicated pedals, as we'll see later on.
R9 and R12: the cockpit wheelbases
The R9 (V3) costs €319 and is MOZA's most affordable standalone wheelbase. It has 9 Nm of torque, a 180 W servo motor with 18 slots and 16 poles, a 21-bit magnetic encoder (over 2 million positions per revolution), an aluminium housing and active cooling with temperature control. The V3 is the current version: if you're looking for the R9 V2, it's no longer in our range. The only review on the product page, a 5-star one, describes it as very responsive with detailed effects.
The R12 (V2) costs €419 and goes up to 12 Nm with 216 W of peak power, an aluminium housing and smart cooling. Compared with the R9 it has more headroom: you can run strong force feedback without reaching the motor's limit, which helps with heavier cars and in long sessions.
Both are also sold in bundles with the KS steering wheel, and it's worth it: the R9 + KS costs €549 and the R12 + KS €649, in both cases €19 less than buying the wheelbase and steering wheel separately. Pedals are not included. To mount them on a desk you need an accessory, such as the MOZA table mounting brackets (€79); with this much torque, though, a rigid cockpit performs better.
R16, R21 and R25 Ultra
The Ultra series is MOZA's latest generation of wheelbases. All three share the 21-bit magnetic encoder, the aluminium alloy housing and two RGB strips; on the back they have ports for pedals, dashboard, shifter, handbrake and emergency stop button, and they can be mounted from below, the front or the side. The R16 and R21 have the new flat-wire servo motor, designed to eliminate cogging, the slight "notchiness" you can feel when turning some motors by hand.
- R16 Ultra (€549): 16 Nm, NexGen U1 force feedback algorithm, 206 × 140 × 135 mm. It costs the same as the R9 + KS bundle but delivers almost twice the torque: if you already have a MOZA steering wheel, it's the Ultra wheelbase to start with.
- R21 Ultra (€799): 21 Nm, CNC-machined aluminium housing, advanced thermal management and support for iRacing's 360 Hz force feedback. It's designed for long races and competitive sim racing.
- R25 Ultra (€999): 25 Nm continuous, a torque sensor that reads force in real time and, according to the product page, smooth rotation free from mechanical interference. It's the most powerful MOZA wheelbase in our range.
A simple way to compare them is price per newton metre. Among the wheelbases sold individually, the R16 Ultra costs around €34 per Nm, the R12 €35, the R9 €35, the R21 €38 and the R25 €40. The R16 therefore offers the best value, and above 16 Nm each extra Nm costs more. Also remember that the R25 quotes continuous torque: when comparing wheelbases from different brands, check whether the figure is continuous or peak.
PC, Xbox and PS5
MOZA wheelbases are designed for Windows PCs and are configured with the MOZA Pit House software, which is also used for firmware updates. MOZA support says so in its wheelbase FAQs: connecting a MOZA wheelbase to a console isn't enough.
- Xbox: a MOZA wheelbase only works on Xbox Series X|S with an Xbox-licensed steering wheel, such as the ESX. In our range you'll find it in the R3 Xbox bundle. According to its product page, the R16 Ultra also works on Xbox with the ESX steering wheel.
- PS4 and PS5: currently no MOZA wheelbase is compatible and there's no official solution. In September 2026 MOZA unveiled its first PS5 setups, not yet on sale: you'll find the details in our guide to steering wheels for PS5 and Xbox.
For truck simulators
For Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator, MOZA offers the TSW steering wheel (€249): 400 mm, four spokes, microfibre grip and RGB buttons. The customer who reviewed it particularly appreciates its true truck-sized dimensions. It's also available in bundles:
- R5 Truck Bundle (€499): R5 5.5 Nm wheelbase, TSW steering wheel, SR-P Lite pedals and a steel stand that tilts from 0 to 75 degrees, so you can mount it on your desk like a truck steering wheel.
- R9 + TSW (€549): R9 9 Nm wheelbase and TSW steering wheel, without pedals, for those who already have a cockpit.
Steering wheels and pedals to pair with it
From the R9 upwards, the steering wheel is bought separately. Our customers' three most popular choices are:
- KS (€249): a 300 mm endurance-style GT steering wheel, 1,220 g, magnetic paddles with Hall sensors, dual clutch paddles and 70 controls across buttons, thumbwheels and joysticks. It's the steering wheel included in the R9 and R12 bundles.
- KS Pro (€349): the same 300 mm shape, with a 2.99" display, 10 RGB buttons, 5 encoders, 12 rev LEDs and forged carbon paddles with dual clutch paddles. It's the MOZA steering wheel we sell most; one customer bought it for his R12 and praises its solidity and the precision of the paddles.
- CS Pro (€349): a 325 mm round steering wheel in hand-stitched microfibre, with the same 2.99" display, 8 RGB buttons and 4 encoders. The customer who reviewed it calls it the best buy in this price range.
If you want a licensed steering wheel, there's the Revuelto (€429), inspired by the Lamborghini hypercar, and the official Porsche Mission R replica (€1,399), with an aluminium frame and a 5.4" OLED display. The customer who reviewed the Revuelto, giving it 4 stars, writes that the price mainly pays for the licence.
A steering wheel from another brand can only be fitted to a MOZA wheelbase if it has a quick release compatible with the D1 SPEC standard, as MOZA support explains; buttons and paddles, however, have to be connected to the PC separately. With a MOZA steering wheel, on the other hand, everything goes through the wheelbase.
For pedals, the step up from the bundle sets is a load cell. The CRP2 (€399) has a brake with a 200 kg load cell alongside a 15-bit angle sensor, aluminium pedals and a carbon footrest; the CRP2 clutch can be added for €109. At the top of the range is the 2-pedal mBooster (€999): the brake is an active, motorised pedal that reaches 200 kg of resistance, vibrates in real time with telemetry and has 15 presets; the throttle is the CRP2's.
Which one to choose
- First setup, at a desk, under €400: R3 Bundle PC if you want to spend as little as possible, R5 Bundle if you plan to drive often, R5 Pro Bundle if you want the 21-bit encoder.
- Gaming on Xbox: R3 Bundle Xbox. You'll still need the ESX steering wheel even if you later move up to a more powerful wheelbase.
- Cockpit and a budget of around €550: R9 + KS if you're starting from scratch; R16 Ultra if you already have a MOZA steering wheel.
- 12 Nm for every discipline: R12 (V2), on its own or with the KS.
- Long races and competitive sim racing: R21 Ultra; R25 Ultra if you want maximum force and the torque sensor.
- Trucks: R5 Truck Bundle at a desk, R9 + TSW on a cockpit.
- More consistent braking: add the CRP2, with its load cell brake, to any wheelbase.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying the R3 Bundle PC to play on Xbox. The wheelbase is the same as in the Xbox bundle, but without the ESX steering wheel it won't work on the console.
- Expecting it to work on PS5. No MOZA wheelbase is currently compatible with PlayStation.
- Assuming the R9, R12 or Ultra models include a steering wheel. On their own they're just the wheelbase: the steering wheel and pedals have to be bought separately, or you can choose a bundle.
- Mounting 16-25 Nm on a desk. With the Ultra models the force will move a table: you need a rigid cockpit.
- Comparing continuous torque and peak torque as if they were the same. Always check how the product page states the Nm.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the MOZA R5 and R5 Pro?
The R5 Pro has 6 Nm instead of 5.5 and a 21-bit encoder instead of a 15-bit one. The bundles also differ in steering wheel and pedals: ES in the R5, ES Lite and SRP Lite 2 in the R5 Pro. At the time of writing, the price difference is €20.
MOZA R9 V2 or V3?
Only the R9 V3, the current version, is in our catalogue, with a 21-bit magnetic encoder and active cooling.
Which is better, the MOZA R9 or the R12?
The R9 if you want to spend less and mainly drive light cars; the R12 if you want more force in reserve for every discipline. There's a €100 difference between the two, whether on their own or bundled with the KS.
Does the MOZA R3 work on Xbox?
Only in the R3 Bundle Xbox version, which has the Xbox-licensed ESX steering wheel. The R3 Bundle PC works on PC only.
Do MOZA wheelbases work on PS5?
No. MOZA support confirms that current products are not compatible with PS4 and PS5. The first PS5 configurations were announced in September 2026, with no prices or release date yet.
Can I fit a steering wheel from another brand to a MOZA wheelbase?
Yes, if the steering wheel has a quick release compatible with the D1 SPEC standard. Buttons and paddles, however, don't go through the wheelbase: the steering wheel has to be connected to the PC with a separate cable.
MOZA, Fanatec or Simagic: which is better?
It depends on how you play and how much you want to spend. If you're also interested in PlayStation, Fanatec is currently the only brand we sell with compatible wheelbases: read our Fanatec wheelbase guide. On PC, compare MOZA wheelbases with the Simagic Alpha EVO at the same torque.
Do I need a cockpit?
Not for the R3 and R5: the bundles include a desk clamp. For the R9 and R12 a desk is fine with the desk clamps, but a cockpit gets more out of them. The Ultra models need a rigid cockpit.
What software do I need?
MOZA Pit House, MOZA's Windows software: it adjusts force feedback, steering angle and lights, and updates the firmware. MOZA also has a smartphone app for quick adjustments.
What support do I get when buying from Direct Drive Italia?
All products come with Italy-based technical support and a 2-year warranty, and ship from our warehouse in Italy.
